FM>Chap 22: Forensic Psychiatry>Short Answer 11

This refers to a condition in which a person under the influence of sleep, leaves his bed & walks in or out of the house without any awareness of his actions , rarely injuring himself. Hence it is also called “sleep walking”. Usually there is some stressful episode of dream preceding the walk. as the mental faculties are partially active & concentrated on one particular area, the person may perform remarkable actions, that would not be possible normally, or even commit a crime such as theft, murder. he is not actually asleep, but in a state of dissociated consciousness/ hallucinatory state, unrelated to the environment. Hence he is not held criminally responsible for any action committed during the episode of sleep walking.
