4) DEFINE IMPULSE. WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS TYPES OF IMPULSE?

ANS:
Impulse is a sudden, irresistible desire/force compelling a person to the conscious performance of some act without motive or forethought. A sane person can control an impulse. An insane having no insight, judgment, reasoning power & understanding capacity, may do things on impulse. It is seen in imbecility, dementia, acute mania & epilepsy.
Types:
1. Kleptomania: an irresistible desire to steal articles of little value.
2. Pyromania: an irresistible desire to set fire to things.
3. Mutilomania: an irresistible desire to mutilate animals.
4. Dipsomania: an irresistible desire for alcoholic drinks at periodic intervals.
5. Sexual impulses: an irresistible desire to have sex, including sexual perversions (refer long essay 1)
6. Suicidal impulse: an irresistible desire to commit suicide.
7. Homicidal impulse: an irresistible desire to kill his /her enemy or any one he sees.
