Classification of Urban Families based on Kuppuswamy’s Socio-Economic Scale
Three parameters are taken into account
while calculation the score on this scale.

  1. Educational status of the head of the family
  2. Occupation of the head of the family
  3. Income ( in Rs../capita/month)

Scoring based on Educational status of Head of the family

  1. Professional Degree or Post Graduate —- 07
  2. BA/Bsc ——- 06
  3. Diploma/ PUC ——- 05
  4. High School ——- 04
  5. Middle School —— 03
  6. Primary School —– 02
  7. Illiterate —– 01

Score based on the Occupation of the
head of the family

  1. Professional — 10
  2. Semi professional — 06
  3. Clerk — 05
  4. Skilled Worker — 04
  5. Semi Skilled worker — 03
  6. Unskilled — 02
  7. Unemployed — 01

Scoring based on Income ( In Rs…../capita/month)

  1. Above 800 — 12
  2. From 400 to 799 — 10
  3. From 300 to 399 — 06
  4. From 200 to 299 — 04
  5. From 120 to 199 — 03
  6. From 40 to 119 — 02
  7. Below 40 — 01

The above three scores are added to get
the Total Score.

Based on the total score, urban
families are divided into

  1. From 26 to 29 —— Upper Class
  2. From 16 to 25 —— Upper Middle Class
  3. From 11 to 15 —— Lower Middle Class
  4. From 05 to 10 —— Upper Lower Class
  5. Below 05 —– Lower Lower Class
